Everybody didn’t have access to the Democratic Party debate

The editor of Buzzflash at Truthout recently wrote that, “By offering the debates on television only to paid subscribers of television packages that included CNN and Fox News, the most important political interaction between candidates for president of the United States was, essentially, privatized.” If you’re living with a net-enabled digital device seemingly glued to your more »

Singapore at 50

Singapore at 50: does diversity contribute to innovation and prosperity? Image: wikimedia commons.

This month marks the 50th anniversary of Singapore‘s independence. Rapid growth may be traced to its founding, as a colony, but more importantly, as a special economic zone. With per capita GDP of $56,000, and 90% home ownership, an achievement aided by the development of Housing Development Board (HDB) homes, the 277 sq. miles are marked by prosperity. HDB helped to eliminate poverty and also promoted diversity: the goal was for Chinese and Malay families alike to think of themselves first as Singaporean. With four official languages, and multiple recognized religions, can Singapore claim the power of diversity in prosperity?

Channels of Migration

Eurotunnel estimates that 37,000 people may have attempted migration through the Channel Tunnel. Tragically, fatalities have occurred. People seeking a way out, a way forward, another way, are using the tunnel linking France and England. In a world challenged by climate migration, political migration, and employment migration, what kinds of channels can be safely provided to get from a troubled “here” to a better “there?”

ST. PETERSBURG RESIDENTIAL CURBSIDE RECYCLING COLLECTIONS BEGIN MONDAY

ST. PETERSBURG, FL (June 25, 2015) – On Monday, June 29, curbside recycling collections begin in St. Petersburg. Residents living in Zone 1 who have containers with grey stickers and wish to participate in the program are reminded to place their containers at the curb by 7 a.m. on Monday. Mayor Rick Kriseman will participate in Monday’s curbside recycling collection rollout with a 9:30 a.m. news conference in front of a resident’s home at 161 19th Avenue South in the Old Southeast neighborhood.

Beginning in Zone 1, new city recycling trucks will move zone by zone throughout the city over the coming weeks to collect recycling. On Tuesday, June 30, trucks begin collections in Zone 3 (red), while residents in Zones 5 (purple) and 7 (pink) will have their recycling collected July 2 and 3, respectively. Residents are encouraged to locate the colored sticker on their container, use the calendar included inside each container welcome kit, or visit www.stpete.org/recycle to find their collection schedule. A large decal on each container lid lists acceptable items for recycling in St. Petersburg’s program.

Recycling containers may be placed at the curb as early as 7 p.m. the night before collection or by 7 a.m. on collection day. Containers should be removed from the street by 7 p.m. the same day following collection.

Residential customers are invited to download St. Pete Collects, a new mobile app for iPhone and Android users to keep track of trash and curbside recycling collection schedules, from their favorite app store. St. Pete Collects lets customers set custom email or text reminders, receive schedule changes due to holidays or bad weather and report missed collections, container issues or other concerns from their mobile device. Customers can also look up an item to find out if it’s recyclable or trash using the Waste Wizard, learn about local mobile collection events, and receive tips for a greener lifestyle. A desktop version of St. Pete Collects is available at www.stpete.org/StPeteCollects.

For more information or to view a list of frequently asked questions about residential curbside recycling in St. Petersburg, visit www.stpete.org/recycle.
